Thursday night was supposed to be must-see television.
The NBA’s leading scorer, Luka Doncic, fresh off
five 40-point games in his last seven outings,
against the reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander,
with playoff positioning on the line.
Instead, it became a disaster — for the Lakers,
and potentially for the entire NBA.
The Score Tells the Story
Oklahoma City Thunder 139, Los Angeles Lakers 96.
A 43-point blowout. Against the Los Angeles Lakers.
Only six times in the Lakers’ entire storied history
have they lost by a larger margin. They came within
six points of the worst defeat in franchise history —
a 49-point loss to Dallas in 2017.
This wasn’t a game. It was an execution.
How Bad Was It?
Let’s put this in perspective.
The Lakers didn’t make their first field goal until
nearly five minutes into the game.
By the end of the first quarter, the Thunder led
44-21 — with Lu Dort alone scoring 14 points.
At halftime? Thunder 82, Lakers 51.
Oklahoma City was one point away from their own
regular-season record for points in a half.
Isaiah Joe — not Gilgeous-Alexander, not any star —
hit three 3-pointers in 85 seconds to push the lead
to 99-61 in the third quarter.
At that point, the game was over. The Lakers were
broken. Both teams played reserves for the entire
fourth quarter.

Gilgeous-Alexander Was Flawless
SGA finished with 28 points and looked every inch
the MVP he is.
But perhaps more impressive than his own performance
was what Oklahoma City’s defense did to Doncic —
a player averaging 40+ points seemingly at will.
Doncic: 12 points. 3-for-10 from the field. 1-for-7 from three.
The Thunder’s suffocating defense turned one of
the most unstoppable scorers in NBA history into
a non-factor. Before he got hurt.
The Real Story: Doncic’s Hamstring
In the middle of the third quarter — with the game
already out of reach — Luka Doncic grabbed his
left hamstring and walked off the court.
He did not return.
Lakers coach JJ Redick confirmed Doncic will have
an MRI on Friday. No further details were given.
This is the moment that could define the Lakers’
entire season.
Doncic has been the Lakers’ entire offense.
He’s led the NBA in scoring. He’s carried this
team on his back through a 13-of-14 stretch that
made Los Angeles look like genuine title contenders.
Now he’s limping into an MRI machine with the
playoffs weeks away.
LeBron James scored 13. Austin Reaves added 15.
But without Doncic, the Lakers aren’t the same team.
Not even close.

What This Means for the Playoffs
Oklahoma City has now won 16 of their last 17 games.
They entered Thursday two games ahead of San Antonio
in the race for home-court advantage throughout
the playoffs — with just six games remaining.
Home court throughout the playoffs is enormous.
It could mean the difference between a championship
run and an early exit.
The Lakers, meanwhile, had won 13 of 14 before
Thursday. They were legitimate. They were dangerous.
Now they face an MRI, a rematch on April 7,
and the very real possibility that their best
player is damaged heading into the most important
stretch of the season.
The Bottom Line
SGA vs Doncic was billed as the MVP showdown
of the year.
Thursday night, it wasn’t even close.
